Hi everyone!  Have you ever tried using lettering on your creative projects?   It’s a pretty fun way to spruce up your planner pages, journals, cards and many more.  Let me just start by saying I am not a lettering expert, but I’d like to share some tips that have made my own lettering skills improve.

There are many books out there that can help you get started with lettering. My personal favourites are Creative Lettering by Jenny Doh and The ABCs of Lettering by Abbey Sy.

I like searching through books, my computer and online to look for fonts/alphabets that I can copy.  Practicing with actual fonts/alphabets can help you to develop your own style.  You can try to mix and match different fonts to make a funky look.

Try using a variety of mark making materials.  Fineliner pens and thin markers will be easier to control and are best for making thin lines.  Fat markers and brush pens can allow you to make fatter strokes.  Watercolors can be blended to make new colors.

My personal favorite style is brush lettering.  Each of us is born with a unique style of handwriting that we can use to our advantage.  You can use brush pens, but I love using watercolor because they’re easier to use.  A watercolor set already comes in many colours and you can easily blend these to make new ones.  To do a faux calligraphy style, just make thin brushstrokes going upward and apply pressure to the downward strokes to thicken them.

Practice makes progress.  Everyone starts off as a newbie and we all get better with time.  At this point, we shouldn’t be pressuring ourselves to make hand lettered masterpieces.  I always remind myself that the point is really to have fun, explore and just keep creating.
