Go Big or Go Home / August Designers Challenge

Hi there Cocoa Daisy fans! How has your summer been? Are kids back at school in your neck of the woods or are the lingering last days of summer taunting? We still have a couple more weeks before facing the return to routine and structure again. While it’s been great to just “be”, it will be nice to return to some semblance of predictability too. With that comes more scrappy time!!f Insert big Cheshire Cat grin there!

On to the real reason we are here, this month’s Designer’s Challenge! It’s simple; use 3 or more pictures on your layout. No pocket pages please – that’s too easy. I take anywhere from 50-250 pictures of outings and it’s a shame to have so many good/decent pictures just sit on the computer/phone. My challenge this month is to have you showcase your pictures not just the amazing product that you have bought. By using a larger number of pictures, the project is forced to be more about the experience and story rather than the product you are using.

Anna and Suz played along with the challenge this month using the August Cocoa Daisy kits. Let’s see what goodness they created for you!

Anna created the above fabulous layout using a series of consecutive photos. I love that the by using the three consecutive photos Anna has created action and movement in this layout. Accentuating that movement is the brown variegated twine that moves across the page, leading your eye from left to right. Absolutely adorable!

Suz’s layout incorporates not one, not two but FOUR pictures! The left three pictures create the scene of her memories and capture a greater feel of the day and memories recorded. What a great memory!

I created the above layout. It is a companion page to the page that you saw in the stamping blog post earlier. I kept a similar color theme and carried the stamping over to the page for some unity. I could have had four pictures and gone bigger on this layout but wanted to incorporate those that told the story and were most relevant only.

Note that all three layouts, the designers have had to scale down their photos. In going bigger and incorporating more photos, you really do need to shrink your pictures down some or the page will be rather crowded. It is doable to use three 4×6 vertical/portrait pictures across the page or in a similar format but you might find that you have little room for white space that rests the eye or room for much else in the way of visual interest.

You have until Friday, September 2nd at 9pm EST to complete this challenge and upload it either here in the message board post. One winner will be picked at random and will $10 to spend in the Daisy store and announced here on the blog on September 3rd.

Can you go big with the number of photos you use or will you go home?! I can’t wait to see what you create!

Idea for next year: maybe we could include the “back to school” stickers and sundries with the August, or even July, kits? I know the Northern parts of the country start school in September, but in the Midwest and south, we are already in schooRead more…
